You know, when I started learning how to make beats online it was quite an adventure. Lots of ups and downs. Oh, and did I mention the money spent? Bucket loads!
If you are reading this, my guess is that you at least have a little bit of talent, otherwise you wouldn’t be interested in even trying to learn how to make those amazing beats.
The only thing standing in the way of you using your talent is the resources.
Now more than always, if you have the desire (like I did) to produce music that sells, the resources are available to make beats online. All you need is discipline and desire to work through to the point of high creativity. Trust me when I tell you that more than 90% of hopeful musicians will never make it big. I was part of that 90% and let me tell you, it sucked!
What’s the reason for this?
Because of a victim mindset that they give into that tells them life isn’t fair and unless they get a huge break like this guy or that girl, they can’t achieve it. Probably the largest obstacle standing in your way is the lack of resources and the lack of money. I remember back in the day, I had to beg borrow and steal (lol, not really) to try and get the right equipment, guides, etc.

Technology has brought so much to the table. Learn to Play By Ear

One thing I have learnt in my long and lustrous career is that you do not need to be an accomplished musician, but to learn to play by ear is important though.
A certain beat mostly derives from a really simple melody. After you learn to play by ear and you can take a melody you heard earlier to your sequencer, you then have a huge advantage over all the Average Joe’s out there.

This is not to say that there isn’t any need for musicians playing real musical instruments, but for the purposes of making hip hop or rap beats, it isn’t that necessary. Once you have established yourself, you could also then go and hire real musicians to play just like the big dogs do.
In any case, a basic ability to play is usually more than enough to get the job done for most of the beat makers out there.
Those people that have practiced extensively are usually able to play by ear, but there are some programs, videos and books readily available for you to learn to play by ear.
As like with anything else in life, being able to play by ear is a skill that will be picked up quicker by some and may take a bit longer for others. I used to struggle a bit with this, but I just carried on working at it. The aim is not to give up.
I remember when I picked up the guitar for the first time that I just wanted to give up. My fingers were extremely dumb and I just could not press the chords. I didn’t give up and today I am far more proficient with the guitar.
Never give up as it is a very valuable skill for any aspiring beat maker to have.
Always try and dedicate some time to listen to other music and try and listen for what notes, scales, samples and melodies are used and how they all fit in with each other.

Start Your Own Record Label – As Seen In XXL Magazine!

If you are anything like me you know that there is one alternative to greatly consider when determining whether to make a living creating music beats is whether or not they should start their own record label.
While I do not have my own record label as yet (I’m getting there, lol)… it really isn’t a bad idea to consider starting one.
There are a couple of advantages when owning a Record Label. This can be leveraged into getting more fees and/or royalties. There is also a Tax deduction that can be fed back into your beat making habit. Although I do have quite a bit of overheads, my main consern at this stage is to actually help others by getting their music and beats heard.
I didn’t even consider starting my own label until a few months ago. The reason is because I have really been fortunate and blessed so far with what I have done and accomplished in my musical career. Doing sessions for big names and learning from the best in the biz.
You need to however make sure that you do everything legally and by the book, otherwise it’ll come back to bite you in the butt, which would not necessarily go down well when trying to build a name for yourself.
A friend of mine tried this once and believe me when I tell you, he is still regretting it. Remember that there is a significant different between making beats to sell and trying to market your beats through your label. There’s bookkeeping, business contracts, loyalties, etc. to worry about.
Start your enterprise with a clear and open head. Don’t take shortcuts, listen and learn. Imagine having to try and produce your beats sitting behind bars… Can’t be fun or easy! Besides, you wouldn’t want the wrong type of “street cred”, wouldn’t you?

Should you want to start your own record label as proprietorship, all financial obligations and obligations will be lying with you. This is the most popular for those of you just starting out.
It’s straightforward and all profits and losses are directly attached to your personal income. The next step would be to a license from the registrar of deeds and therefore make it legal.
Some guys will try and start a partnership. One guy makes the beats and the other runs and maintains the business. This is a good option and I know quite a few people doing this, but you need to make sure you have everything written down on paper. Things like responsibilities, shares, etc. It’s also a good idea to try and get a lawyer when signing partnerships or contracts.
There are packages available today that will help you start your own record label. The payoff with having your own record label will be greater than to just be hired, but be careful… You need to check things out first.
Do your homework and try to get as much info as possible.
